In Coda, Steven Seidenberg takes that assumption apart. An unnamed narrator drifts on a leaky vessel, perhaps dreaming or in some liminal space that cannot fit easily into life or death. They try to make sense of who they are, or who they have been or will be, remembering how it all began. The trouble is that every 'first' seems to have something before it.
