While by 1975 the golden age of American rebellion was largely over, and dark, nihilistic movies like Taxi Driver and Woman Under the Influence were hitting the cinemas, the memory of liberation and nonconformism remained strong in the minds of Americans. Ken Kesey, on whose excellent novel Milos Forman's famous movie is based, was an emblem of the hippy decade. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest a regular rebel ends up in the looney bin and finds out it is worse than prison.
