Multilingual children are increasingly present in schools, and concerns about their learning or language development can lead to referrals for possible disorders. Although multilingual children can experience language and learning disorders, distinguishing these from temporary difficulties linked to limited exposure to the societal language remains challenging, with risks of both over- and under-diagnosis. This is particularly important for specific learning disorders, as school demands increasingly rely on literacy and numeracy.
