How much of the wage penalty associated with chronic health conditions is driven by workers’ health, and how much by the firms that employ them? Drawing on linked Hungarian employer-employee administrative data, Dr Balázs Muraközy examines the employment and earnings consequences of chronic health conditions and the role firms play in amplifying or mitigating them. He shows that workers with chronic health conditions are less likely to work at high-paying firms, yet this explains only part of the gap.
