He called this "Obedience to the Unenforceable": what we do simply because we hold ourselves to it, with no one checking. Some countries steadfastly adhere to these norms. No loud noise on Sundays, a shared laundry room left cleaner than found, communal norms upheld with no legal backing at all. In this salon, we'll ask whether this middle domain has eroded in the US and elsewhere, and how do we rebuild it.
