AI promises to transform healthcare, education and governance, yet its benefits remain concentrated in a handful of languages, leaving most of the world’s 7,000+ linguistic communities digitally marginalised. This talk presents a global longitudinal analysis of the social, economic and infrastructural conditions shaping access to language AI across 6,003 languages. Despite efforts to broaden access, disparities between languages are widening exponentially rather than narrowing, and AI diffuses through a distinctive, hype-driven pattern unlike earlier information technologies.
