Media manipulation is a defining concern of our time, particularly the ways in which Russia uses it to shape public opinion at home and abroad during its war against Ukraine. Yet most research on ‘disinformation’ focuses on text. Drawing on W.J.T. Mitchell’s concept of the imagetext, this lecture examines Telegram channels that, to varying degrees and across several languages, adopt the genre conventions of fact-checking, itself a form of policing that determines what may circulate as true and who has the authority to verify it.
