This talk examines how Manchu-language primers taught students not only a language, but also ways of navigating everyday life in Qing China (1644–1911). Drawing on a range of printed and manuscript primers held in collections in the United States, Europe, and East Asia, it explores how dialogues designed to teach Manchu incorporated topics such as school routines, festival customs, and food. Rather than treating language learning as separate from lived practice, these materials point to a pedagogy that embedded linguistic training within the rhythms of daily life.
