Presenting findings from a Photovoice study with people seeking asylum or with refugee status in Lancaster and Morecambe, this seminar considers care and carelessness as a structuring logic of contemporary bordering regimes. Through the concept of “careless bordering,” it argues that the UK state’s moral distancing, its refusal to assume responsibility for certain migrants’ welfare, and its increasingly restrictive asylum regime together constitute a key mechanism of governance that reveals care as a site of control.
