The Case of Forest Exploitation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1850-1970 This lecture explores the development and nature of extractivist capitalism in Southeastern Europe. Focusing on the period from the 1850s to the 1970s, it covers the region’s most intense period of industrialisation and extractive industries, after which it underwent a complex socio-economic and ecological transition. Particular focus is given to forest extraction in today’s Bosnia and Herzegovina. Forests were the region’s most abundant natural resource and a major source of economic activity for the state and society.
